How Nine Run a Standout Corporate School Holiday Program

Overview

Nine reported to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) that 100% of primary carers in their workplace were women. Nine was made aware that this was a driver for their parental employees to take leave for childcare responsibilities when they struggle to find alternative care arrangements.

Nine discovered that the school holiday periods have a decrease in productivity due to juggling childcare and workplace responsibilities. A bulk of Nine employees with primary carer responsibilities would take time off during the school holidays for childcare purposes which would increase the workload for their colleagues.

Key Challenges

  1. Implementing impactful support for their parental employees
  2. Decreased productivity and engagement during school holidays
  3. Increased sick leave is taken during the school holidays

Solution

KidsCo was engaged to facilitate a week-long school holiday program designed for 5 – 12 year olds that aligned with their company’s culture and values. The onsite program took place across 4 Nine offices in Melbourne and Sydney. The KidsCo program was used as a solution to support Nine’s parental employees who are 100% the primary carers in their household and to help reduce the workload for non-parental employees.

Impact

Over the school holiday program period, Nine saw an improvement in the following:

  • 100% of employees felt more supported and valued
  • 86% of employees took less sick leave
  • 70% of employees were more engaged and productive in their work

Please don’t reduce the number of days offered! My child really loves being at my office and especially when he can be involved in unique experiences, like when he sat at the newsroom desk, and when he met the NRLW players! – Working Mum from Nine
